Coping with 'just a little cancer'
IF ANYONE has a right to be scared of cancer, it is Jeannie Fraser.
After all, the disease runs in her family and has taken its deadly toll.
But when Fraser got her own diagnosis of breast cancer in September, the Cape Breton mother had an entirely different reaction.
"I don’t know why I knew, but I just knew I’d be OK," she said recently from her home in Westmount, outside Sydney.
"Believe me, no one in my family survives cancer. Maybe I was young and ignorant, but I never had a reason of doubt. Not for one second did I ever relate the word cancer to dying."
Fraser has since undergone a quadrantectomy and sentinel lymph node removal on her right breast and had several rounds of chemotherapy that brought with it the full range of side-effects, including hair loss.
