Over the past few years, there has been a noticeable spike in the number of black women choosing to wear their hair natural, and to forego the hours of dangerous perms, hair straightening and expensive weaves. Many of the women who choose to begin this “hair journey” have had their hair chemically processed since childhood, have not seen the natural texture of their hair for years, and have no idea how to take care of it. This has inspired a new market for hair products, and an array of online tutorials and forums on hair care. “Going natural” has not just become a trend –it has prompted a rethinking of a lot of preconceived notions about black beauty in the media, which has often been limited to a certain “look.”
