25th birthday inspires her hair donation
Charlotte Tatum Maness got into the Valentine’s Day spirit early. She chose to combine the importance of her 25th birthday on Jan. 27 with cutting her long, dark hair as a gift to “Locks of Love,” a nonprofit organization that accepts donated human hair.
The hair will be used to make wigs for disadvantaged children whose hair is lost to disease. For most of us women and girls, cutting our hair is no big event, just a regular appointment at a hairdresser’s salon. We live in a time when hairstyles are eclectic — anything goes.
But for Tatum, who has worn her hair long for so many years, giving up and giving away her defining look became a gift of love.
A native of Eden and the daughter of Charlotte and Duane Maness, Tatum graduated from Morehead High School, where she was a member of the dance team and a cheerleader. She received her child care credentials and cosmetology certification from Rockingham Community College.
