Solon preparing for L'Oreal plant closing

SOLON -- L’Oreal USA announced plans Jan. 31 to close its longtime manufacturing plant on Carter Street “on or about the end of 2013,” in a consolidation move that will affect 260 local jobs.

City officials were surprised and saddened by the announcement to close the plant, which produces shampoo and conditioner. It opened as Matrix Essentials in 1975 before being bought out by L’Oreal.

In keeping with their longstanding reputation as good corporate citizens, L’Oreal officials started by calling Mayor Susan Drucker directly that morning, to relay the news to her.

“We appreciate the lead time, the opportunity to fill the pending vacancy and to assist any displaced workers who may need help after the closing,” said Peggy Weil Dorfman, Solon’s economic development director.
