Franklin upends McDowell girls for tournament title
The Franklin girls basketball team might be at a height disadvantage against most opponents this season.
But the Knights' intense full-court press could erase that disadvantage in a heartbeat.
Franklin used its defensive intensity to force 11 first-quarter turnovers and jump out to a 16-point lead Friday night. McDowell fought back in the second half, but the Knights hit too many shots in the fourth quarter and won the McDowell tournament by beating the Trojans 76-54 in front of 350 fans at Paul Goll Gymnasium.
"The first quarter hurt us, but I think we played with more control in the second and third quarters," McDowell coach Tami Gillette said. "The girls just looked rattled out of the gate."
General McLane (5-2) won the consolation game 62-27 over Class AA power Greenville (7-2).
