Ket, meph, crystal and gbl: the party drugs blighting the lives of clubbers
Like many of the exclusive clubs where London's latest generation of drug users mingle, the new Club Drug Clinic in the bowels of Chelsea and Westminster hospital welcomes its visitors through an inauspicious door that commuters rushing up to Fulham Road could be forgiven for missing. Behind it, in a low-ceilinged, functional-looking suite of rooms, consultant psychiatrist Dr Owen Bowden-Jones is fighting a battle very much of its moment.
The clinic was opened in late September, promising to treat a new generation of drug takers, hooked on a new mix of drugs. As the country's only open-access clinic for the users of "club drugs" - including ecstasy, ketamine, mephedrone, GBL, crystal meth and the raft of so-called "legal highs" - the facility is a daring innovation in the field of substance treatment, as well as a victory for Bowden-Jones, who campaigned hard for the annual £130,000 NHS grant to start it.
