Sheboygan woman reflects on 50-year career in cosmetics sales that began with ...
SHEBOYGAN , Wis. — When an Avon representative knocked at Yvonne Combs' door 50-some years ago and left behind a little catalog, Combs had never heard of the beauty products company that would come to dominate her life in a very unexpected way.
She perused the catalog and considered the representative's invitation to learn more about selling the products herself, but her husband, Lee, urged her to hold off for just a while.
"He said, 'You've got children here,' so I waited until my last child went to school," Combs recalled.
Once that happened, Combs signed a contract to sell Avon, a contract she still has, bearing the date — Nov. 1, 1961 — that took a shy girl from Chicago and turned her into an accomplished saleswoman who would amass more than $100,000 in lifetime sales, winning awards and traveling to New York for a sales meeting. She estimated that she participated in more than 1,000 Avon campaigns, each individual campaign lasting approximately two weeks.
