Spirit of Dr. Seuss is alive, well to celebrate reading
FOLLANSBEE - From the mischievous Cat in the Hat to the green-colored goo featured in "Bartholomew and the Oobleck," the creations of Dr. Seuss seemed to come to life through several interactive activities at Hooverson Heights Primary School Friday.
In celebration of Read Across America Day, which is observed nationally each year on Dr. Seuss' birthday, pupils engaged in a variety of activities organized by Carrie Ciccolella, the school's Title I reading instructor.
In the school's cafeteria, children took turns stirring together corn starch, water and green food coloring to create oobleck. The pasty concoction has an unusual, soft texture that hardens quickly, so Ciccolella and other teachers and volunteers were quickly scooping it into plastic baggies for the pupils to take home from them.
