Raising hope by razing hair
On March 4, O’Loughlin’s Restaurant at 1258 Bay Dale Drive in Arnold is hosting its fourth annual fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The following Sunday, Fado Irish Pub, located at 1 Park Place in downtown Annapolis, holds its fifth annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser. Both promise spectacular hair-razing extravaganzas to raise funds for research to find cures for childhood cancers.
St. Baldrick’s Foundation began as a challenge between friends on St. Patrick’s Day 2000. Since the first hair-razing, more than $120 million has been raised and more than 200,000 heads shaved at over 4,900 St. Baldrick’s events. About 10 percent of those shaved are women of all ages. Last year, as the hair flew, over $28.2 million was raised. Approximately 82 percent of the proceeds goes to childhood cancer research.
