Bloomingdale's at Mall of America closing; space to be divided
Bloomingdale's is closing its only store in Minnesota, but Mall of America already has big plans for the soon-to-be vacant space.
The megamall will divide the department-store space into sites for five other retailers, including three "fashion-forward" tenants unique to the Twin Cities, mall spokesman Dan Jasper said today. It is also enlarging its retail floor space, by opening up a basement area beneath the Bloomingdale's store.
Construction will begin next month, and cost more than $30 million, Jasper said. He wouldn't identify the new stores until leases had been signed.
For Bloomingdale's, today's closing news ends a 20-year run in Minnesota as one of Mall of America's original anchor tenants. Fashionistas loved the store for designer names and chic labels like Burberry
