But stuffed inside was the torso of a young woman, believed to be Asian. Her arms were also found inside but the victim’s head and legs were missing.
The following day, the mystery deepened when the a woman’s legs were found in an Indian-made suitcase pulled from the River Roding, at Ilford, in Essex.
Hundreds of detectives raced around the country trying to identify all of the passengers who had travelled on that service. Other liaised with members of the Indian and Pakistani communities in the hope they could help police penetrate the close-knit communities.
Almost three weeks into the inquiry, police revealed a possible breakthrough when the murder room published the artist’s impression of the man, said to have been the first passenger on the 10.40pm service.
