Cosmetics ingredients lack risk assessment

Shampoos, conditioners, lotions, deodorants and makeup are just a few of the personal care products used every day by millions of people. However, most of the ingredients found in these products lack safety testing and risk assessment.

Consumers use about 10 personal care products per day, containing about 126 ingredients, according to the non-profit Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Skin Deep database. However, of all the 10,500 ingredients found in personal care products, only 13 percent have ever been reviewed for safety by the Cosmetics Ingredients Review (CIR), according to EWG’s database.

The CIR consists of a review panel which was founded in 1976 by the industry trade association, which is now the Personal Care Products Counci l, with the support of the Food and Drug Administration and the Consumer Federation of America . The CIR states their review process is independent and operates under a set of procedures. However, their funding comes from the industry trade association.

DIY Transluscent Face Powder

Creating your own makeup isn’t as difficult as it sounds.  There are simple and natural ingredients that you can use to make your own cosmetics.  I recently purchased a matte mineral foundation from Bare Escentuals to use for my latest photo shoot.  The overall finish was beautiful, yet I still had to adjust the color with iron oxides to match my complexion.

Going back to using my own DIY Cream Foundation with a simple DIY Transluscent Face Powder actually had better results.  The color was a perfect match still providing the flawless matte finish I love.  My own DIY makeup is formulated specifically for my skin tone and blends seamlessly.  You can read about my process of creating mineral makeup in Creating Mineral Makeup–Liquid or Powder , and see my exact foundation recipe in Minimalist Beauty’s Makeup Bag .
