It's one of the benefits of being a man: Your personal upkeep is in no way demanding. Aside from a couple of responsibilities general cleansing, maybe moisturizer there's not much that you need to do every day. And so you get a little lax. You go a few more days without trimming your beard, convince yourself that no one's going to notice the length of your fingernails. You push the boundaries. Keep it under an inch in length. According to Bret Reichley, who trims more beards than I do at F.S.C. Barber in New York, if you have a lighter beard, you can grow it longer and give the impression of density. Thick beards need more maintenance, as they can get unruly faster. Just be sure to keep your neck and cheeks well trimmed. Remove strays once a week. Maybe get one of those little combs. If you remember only one thing, make it this: For the sake of your mouth and anyone who might get close to it, hair should never encroach upon the lips, no matter the length of your beard.
