COVINGTON, Ky. — Some northern Kentucky churches are finding creative ways to help the needy in tough economic times.
There are the traditional free meals and food pantries, but some houses of worship are also offering such services as basic car care, workshops on resume writing and interview techniques, and a monthly "spa treatment" for women who are down on their luck and seeking a reprieve from stressful lives.
Madison Avenue Christian Church started its popular Samaritan Car Care program in response to requests at the church's twice-a-week community dinners.
"At those dinners, we'd have women say, 'Do you also have money for gas?' or 'Can you help me get an oil change?'" church member Bruce Kintner told The Kentucky Enquirer ( http://bit.ly/u1ys9I ). Kintner, a senior vice president with PNC Bank, enjoys tinkering with vehicles in his spare time.
