On Saturday afternoon, in the narrow shop with a three-colored pole outside, about two dozen of Smitty’s childhood customers, now in their 60s, surprised him to say goodbye and good luck. Smitty, a jovial man of 83, is retiring this month after 49 years.
And although the men who gathered in the Manor Park Barber Shop had been there countless times, only one knew his full name: Harold Smith.
The event quickly turned into a reunion of childhood friends long scattered by work, marriage and retirement. They drove in from Bowie, Upper Marlboro and Largo, greeting each other with backslaps and guffaws and jokes about old beefs and about how the years had changed them. Some had grown paunchy, others gray.
“You still owe me that $20,” one man said as he hugged another, roaring with laughter.
